Landscaping tips with Daniel: The next stage

Now that you’ve got the planning and prep stages covered, as well as some fantastic planting ideas to think about. It’s time to talk reticulation, mulching and garden presentation. Daniel from @landscape_ideasperth is back with even more tips to make the most of your backyard space.

There’s no doubt that ensuring your garden has the right nutrients and care will make sure outdoor space is looking luscious all year round!

Reticulation and sprinkers

For garden areas, a sub surface drip line is best. Not only are they water efficient but they penetrate the soil and roots of the plants directly to where water is needed.

There is no over spray on windy days and no over spray onto footpaths and walls. bonus point it is easy to install and can be a DIY?‍♂️

When it comes to lawn, over-head pop up sprinklers are the way to go. Daniel recommends a quality pop up such as Toro, as cheaper sprinklers can produce problems down the track.

Size does matter when it comes to your sprinklers. Daniel recommends a 4 inch sprinkler at a minimum. Smaller pop ups won’t be as affective if your grass is left too long. If the sprinkler is too small it will stop an even spray of water and result in dead patches.

Make sure to check the direction your sprinklers are facing when they spray. That way they aren’t under shooting or spraying in an area what will result in water wastage.

Garden lighting

Daniel suggests installing garden lighting in any backyard. It will invite guest outside and will become a much more versatile area. Garden lighting is easy to install as it can be low voltage and still produce great lighting. Using 5 wattage (w) spike lights in your garden beds are perfect for up-lighting any screening trees. For a larger feature tree, use a 15w globe to give that extra bit of light to make it stand out in your space.

Another great lighting idea are festoon lights (the string lights with light globes). Having them hung from a patio, tree or the house looks great and will light up the area perfectly.

When it comes to the type of colour produced from the light, 9 times out of 10 it will be a “warm light” which creates a cozy soft feel compared to a “cool light” but it’s totally up to you.

Finish off with mulch!

Once you have your plants, retic and lighting installed it’s time to finish of the garden. Not only does mulch complete the garden, it neatens up the entire space and has some great benefits too.

The main purpose of mulch is to retain moisture in the soil. It also suppresses those pesky winter weeds, saving you time with maintenance. It also keeps the soil at a desired temperature for all year growth and helps prevent disease.  For the best results keep your mulch topped up at least once a year, as it will degrade over time.

Dan's top tips

  • Make sure water and reticulation is effectively penetrating the plants and lawn.
  • Quality black mulch is best for your garden
  • Pine bark is a great alternative
  • Apply mulch 80mm thick for the best results
