All things landscaping with Tarina

Let’s talk landscaping!

Not something you typically hear from us (we like to leave this up to the experts at Landscapes WA). But we wanted to share the next stage in the building journey of our amazing Interior Decorator, Tarina of oh.eight.oh.nine.

Tarina’s build is now at lock up ? The walls, doors and windows are all done and now the internals of the home can start to take shape.

Lock up is the perfect time to start thinking about your landscaping! You’ll have visited your site (for those site stalkers, quite a few times we’re sure) so you’ll have an idea of the space you have to work with in your back and front yard.

And we bet you’ve been getting a little antsy about moving into your new home, so planning your landscaping can take your mind of things.

Well, the always prepared Tarina has shared with us her own plans for landscaping and we are in love ? She has created a beautiful backyard that is an extension of her internal design.

When designing her home, Tarina notes that they prioritised a larger floor plan over outdoor space.

“Knowing our space is limited, I designed an outdoor area that flows on from our interior, maximises space and sunlight, is practical, functional and stylish.”

To replicate the contemporary, urban design of Tarina’s home, you’ll find a recurrence of colours and finishes in her design, inspired by choices inside the home.

Design tip:

Repetition of colours and textures helps pull two spaces together

“Our roof, window frames, fence, open structure, garden edging and some of the outdoor furniture will all be similar shades to Colorbond Monument. This ensures a continuous and harmonious flow throughout the outdoor areas.”

You’ll also notice the beautiful raw, organic texture of recycled brick repeated in the front (letterbox/low wall) and back (planter box) landscaping.

“The various warm tones of the brick will help tie in the spotted gum battens and soften the black and white contrasting colour scheme.”

Design tip:

Save floorspace with built in bench seating

In effort to save space in her outdoor area, you’ll find a large L-shaped bench seat built in to Tarina’s backyard. Made from the same materials as her front feature wall, this creates a tonne of seating room without the need for bulky outdoor furniture.

Design tip:

Pretty up your fencing using foliage as screens

For some style and added privacy, Tarina has lined her fencing with beautiful Magnolia trees. Not only are the colours of the flowers and leaves going to compliment her design, they grow nice and full, so you won’t find any neighbours peeking over your fence ?

Now, with Tarina deciding to tackle the largest cost outlays first, landscaping was naturally first on her list, as landscaping can be one of the biggest costs post construction ?

“Landscaping is our first priority at the moment because we are not savvy gardeners but want to create and enjoy a beautiful outdoor space.”

You might choose to do the same or give it a few months. You might even give a right old go of it yourself. Either way, we’re all for some preparation. Check out some Pinterest boards, visit your local Bunnings for ideas, even check out your neighbours’ yards.

Having some fore thought about your design will allow you to create a cohesive, practical space, where your money is well spent. This will also allow you to make sure you get the most out of your design.

Planning her design allowed Tarina to make sure her indoor entertaining areas are flooded with as much natural light as possible, opting for part boxed recess ceiling, part open structure over the alfresco.

“This will ensure that the lounging area of the yard is light filled, as well as the games room which filters through to the rest of the open plan area.

Our outdoor dining space will still be completely roof covered and we felt that this design made the most of Perth’s climate, the natural sunlight and the way we want to use our backyard.”
