Adding art into your home adds dimension and personality into your home.

At the end of the day, your home is meant to be an extension of who you are. Add things which make you feel at home.

No matter your theme or colour palette, make sure the pieces you choose speak to you!

Theme

When choosing artwork for you’re home, it’s important that they complement the overall theme. Whether your theme focus’ on costal living which features blue hues and sandy tones or carries a bright contrasting urban theme throughout.

Making sure your theme stays cohesive throughout is key. When your pieces of art complement one another, you’re creating impact!

Placement

Deciding where to place your art can be a tricky thing. With so many spaces to work with, knowing where to make the greatest impact can be hard. Tarina has broken it down into a few key areas to help you get started!

Above a console or buffet

  • Keep the artwork size within the edges of the furniture underneath.
  • If you’re working with a smaller piece of furniture, a larger square frame will work well in balancing the space.
  • Utilising statement mirrors can help in breaking up a room.

On empty walls or in hallways

These spaces can be difficult as you have floor to ceiling space to work with. Instead of filling the space with one long piece of landscape art, try creating vibrancy by adding unique features to the space.

Think about creating a gallery of photos or using two larger portrait pieces together. Or even try creating a gallery space to hang belongings!

In the kids bedroom

Of course your number one concern should be your little ones safety when it comes to bedroom decoration. So if you think they’ll reach and tug at artwork, it’s best to keep things that are completely ‘hanging’ out of reach.

Hanging elements can act as artwork in the kids bedroom as they add a visual layer to the room. Try using different textures in the bedroom like garlands, mobiles, canopies or even a hanging plant to create an added vibrancy.

Budgeting for artwork

Tarina’s top tips for budgeting!

Artwork can add up quite quickly. Tarina suggests starting with the most visible parts of your home and work your way back to lesser seen areas such as laundries, back hallways and home offices.

Tarina's top tips

  • Canvas prints/paintings are great for areas that have lots of natural light opposite or near where they are hung. This reduces an intense reflection you would get on a framed glass print.
  • When hanging two artworks side by side, Tarina suggests asking your picture hanger for a 100mm gap. The gap depends of the size of your pieces, but try to aim for between 80-150mm.
  • If you’re struggling with a room having too many pieces of artwork, consider other objects like a mirror, clock, shelves or wall hangings. This avoids using an overload of frames on the wall and introduces other shapes into the space.
