Wattyl: Paint like the professionals
Welcome to Painting 101. We’re here to turn you (or at least a close relative) into the professional painters we know you can be and to make sure your first paint job is perfect the first time around.
Painting is one of those tasks where you’ll thank yourself for the planning and preparation. You live within these walls everyday, and at the moment, probably look at them for a large portion of your day. Any imperfections will start to bother you over time. So, our always helpful friends at Wattyl have hooked us up with their best tips to ensure your paint job is smooth, even and done right the first time.
1. Prep your surfaces
Like an artist, start with a blank, clean surface. Wipe down your walls with a damp cloth and remove any the dust and marks. Some areas may need patching, spackle can help here. This is worth the outlay and is actually pretty fun to play with, its like icing a flat cake, and your walls will be nice and smooth afterwards, so don’t neglect.
2. See what’s trending
Check out Pinterest, Instagram, home design blogs or one of our display homes (beautifully designed by our talented Interior Designer, Tarina of oh.eight.oh.nine – you can view them here) for inspiration when it comes to choosing your colour scheme. You might come across a colour combo you had never even considered.
Take note of colour palettes, paint finishes and design trends that will suit your lifestyle and décor.
Wattyl can help too. Check out the Wattyl Colour Forecasts or upload a photo of your room to the Wattyl Virtual Painter at wattyl.com.au to see how different colours will look in your home. They’re the experts for a reason.
3. The big decision: Colour & Paint finishes
Every space is different and should be treated accordingly. Consider the amount of natural light in the room, the size of the space and the wear and tear it may experience over time when it comes to choosing your colour.
Wattyl has an amazing range of colours, but if you are struggling to find the perfect one, take a sample to your local Wattyl paint experts and they’ll use their fancy paint technology to tint your paint to match, they’re that good!
Wattyl Tip: Low sheen paints are great for high-traffic areas as they are highly washable, and semi-gloss and satin finishes are perfect for skirtings and doors.
4. Your trusty tools
We spoke early about investing in your prep, well, invest even more in your paint tools!! Take it from someone who has painted their fair share of walls, your paint tools are worth it. There is nothing worse than finding paint brush bristles or roller fluff throughout your paint job.
The quality of your rollers and brushes can mean the difference between an average paint job and a superior finish that will leave a lasting impression.
Your shopping list:
- Quality Roller
- Quality Paint Brush (for corners and skirting boards)
- Roller tray
- Drop cloths
- Painting tape (if marking off areas – also helps keep those skirting boards sans paint)
- Cleaning equipment
5. Consult the experts… Visit a Wattyl Paint Centre

Remember, you can always rope your family and friends in with the promise of a party, a painting party that is. Snacks, music, drinks (for AFTER the painting is done) and you’ll be finished in no time. Just be careful who you invite, paints stains. Have fun!
