Plant guide: Easy to care plants and the best place for them in your home.

Indoor plants are everyone’s must have home accessory. And it’s not all about pretty flowers in a vase anymore, people are practically growing forests in their home, and we’re all for it.

Now when it comes to indoor plants, some are easier to look after than others. So, to prevent the heartbreak of your plant giving up on you in the first week or two, check out our recommendations for your first dalliance with the indoor plants.

Devil's Ivy

Not only do these long vine-like plants look great draped over your bookcase, but these suckers are hard to kill, so they are a great investment for your first plant. Place them in a pretty pot and watch them take over your home.

  • Filtered sunlight
  • Summer: once a week, Winter: once every two weeks
  • Anywhere!

Monstera

Looking for a fuller plant for the corner, this large leaf beauty is the one. This tropical plant can get up to 60cm wide. You can understand why they like their space, so don’t crowd these guys. If they get too big, a simple prune will fix this. Tip – don’t let these clippings go to waste, the glossy green leaves look beautiful on their own in any vase.

  • Bright, filtered sunlight
  • Once a week (but make sure the soil is dry before you re-water)
  • Wherever the sun is!

Fiddle Leaf Fig

It wouldn’t be a true plant guide if we didn’t mention the fiddle leaf fig. Now, these guys can grow, with their typically height ranging from 2-3m to ceiling height. That’s a lot of foliage! The trick with the Fiddle Leaf is making sure they have a comfy home from day one, so we recommend replanting them into a beautiful pot.

  • Bright light, filtered (just watch those leaves, these guys can get a little sunburnt)
  • Once a week (but if the soil isn’t dry, give it a few days)
  • Wherever that sun is!

Chinese Evergreen

The Chinese Evergreen will make any novice plant parent look like a pro. This is a hardy plant, low light or not enough water, don’t worry, you will be forgiven for a less than ideal environment. And though a slow grower, the speckled green leaves of this plant will compliment any space beautifully.

  • Filtered Sunlight
  • Once a week (but again, watch that soil isn’t too damp)
  • Anywhere! (just don’t forget about them)

So, who’s already at the Bunnings’ nursery buying their first plant/s?

Before you get to the checkout, we do recommend…

Starting small – see how you go remembering to water the first one, if that goes to plan, personal greenhouse it is!

Read the tag – do not underestimate the value of the little tag stuck in the front of the pot. Along with the really long scientific name of the plant, this tag is basically a ‘get to know you’ guide that you do not want to lose.

Make sure you have a pot. The pots your plants come in have holes for water drainage, they will leak and ruin your furniture. Though it may be common sense, we just thought we would

Last but not least

We don’t consider “crazy plant lady” a negative term, but if your roommates or partner start to have a go at the sheer number of plants taking over your space, just remind them…

  • You’ll have the cleanest air.
  • We can’t forget the power of small “wins” for the psyche (like keeping your plant alive for more than a week, and then celebrating by buying another plant)
  • Plants teach you responsibility (that’s one for the parents?)

All that’s left is to enjoy your new friends and don’t forget to water them!!
